This database provides updated information on terrestrial wildlife species and their habitat relationships within the BC Columbia River Basin. Understanding species and their habitat relationships is crucial to predicting species’ responses to past, present, and future land uses with both the BC and US parts of the Columbia Basin.

As of September 2002, the BC database has been applied to development of forestry strategies for the Tembec TFL (Invermere) and the Arrow Timber Supply Area, both within the BC Columbia Basin.  The database model is also being used outside the Columbia Basin by the Langley Environmental Partners Society to develop wildlife habitat objectives for the Township of Langley. Links to these projects and their products are provided on this page.

It is expected that the database will be applied to more local and basin-wide resource management issues and education in the future.  For example, database applications could include any or all of the following:

  • Sub-basin and watershed planning
  • Total (US and BC) Basin Planning under the Columbia River Treaty
  • Cross border management of species at risk in US or Canada
  • Planning for land management activities such as hydro, forestry, mining, tourism, parks, and wildlife habitat enhancement
  • Community planning (districts, cities, towns, local areas)
  • Education (Universities, Schools, NGOs)
